Kenzie taking control of his cochlear implants

At present, Kenzie is five years old, and he is getting more independent thanks to his cochlear implants each day.

He enjoys taking care of the regular upkeep of his hearing aids, which includes charging the batteries and putting them into dry boxes. He’s also able to fully switch the batteries on and off by himself without me.

Kenzie has become more adept at identifying the different levels of noise and environment. He is now able to alter the processing volume to his preference based on the location we are in.

At present, we are using the Cochlear application on my phone to alter the volume. When we’re in a noisy place, like an event, he’ll insist that I turn his ears off. I’ll lower the volume one increment at a time until he asks that I should stop (normally between 10 and 6). He will then inform me when he’s willing to turn them up.

He’s now able to switch into his Aqua Kit and switch the radio assist without my assistance, and I’m confident that he’s sure enough to take charge of his cochlear by himself in my absence.

As he becomes older, I’ll start making use of the remote in order to alter his volume. This will allow him to be in charge of it and begin to adjust the book according to his needs. Kenzie also owns his smartphone, so once he’s a bit older, I’ll be able to add the Cochlear app to his phone to help him grow more independent.

He’s very proud of his amazing ears, and I love the fact that he’s willing to take on the responsibility of caring for the ears. In the end, they’re an integral part of the person he is.
