Decorating your child’s hearing technology
A few years ago, I was talking to a friend about decorating the magic ears of our children. Her son was about one year ahead of ours in his journey to cochlear implants. She told me to buy washi tape. It was inexpensive and came in a variety of colors that matched Princess’s outfits.
Princess was not bothered by my attempts to decorate her ears. I only did it once or twice. She is very fond of her ears, but I thought that they were already a baby pink color and this was enough.
The only exception was at school, where no one could a yet. Only at school was there an exception, because nobody could Sign.
Scroll back to yesterday, when she was “tidying” her room. Parents know that this is a way for children to make messes by pulling out things they have forgotten and playing with them. She found half a dozen roll of washi tape in the initial destruction and asked me for their purpose.
She was intrigued and wanted to decorate the tiles immediately.
Each piece was done differently, and not as neatly (as you can see), yet she is happy with the results. She wants to wear them to her school to show off to her friends and teachers.
I didn’t want her to “own her deafness” as she does it to perfection. Anyone who has been told “I’m Deaf, you know” can attest to this! This has been an amazing next step for her.
