Kenzie starts swimming lessons
You will have seen that Kenzie is a big fan of swimming if you’ve read my previous blogs. He is a water baby. He loves to splash around in the water.
This month, he was finally able to begin his swimming lessons at our local leisure center after being on the waiting list for several months. I was eager to see him start because I struggled to find activities and hobbies that he could do and enjoy. I was thrilled he got a space.
I was worried about how he’d do in the water and with his aqua kit (swimming ears), but he loves it! He is so confident and friendly in the water.
You will be familiar with the difficulty of keeping the Aqua Kit on while splashing around in the water. Kenzie has always worn a headband (similar to a sweatband) that I use with her. However, this band still comes off when she puts her head under the water. I make sure that he clips them to his swimsuit just in case they come off.
We use a swimming cap. Not a tight lycra hat, as it would be uncomfortable and make him hard to hear. I found a fabric version of the same style, which I highly recommend! He can keep his ears in place when he is dipping his head into and out of water. And he got to pick his cool designs. He picked cars and superheroes, of course!
He’s been to several sessions and loves it. He can’t get enough of it. I am also teaching him to use the Aqua Kit and how to replace the pieces. He now enjoys telling us how and where to place them as we switch them. He likes to put them in his dry container that evening and turn on the button.
The instructor is very supportive. She makes sure to speak louder, and she also shows Kenzie the correct actions. He has a hard time hearing in such a noisy environment. However, this does not stop him from keeping up with the rest of his group.
This week, we will try the mini-mic to see if it helps him hear the teacher better. I’ll let you know what we find out!
